HM Revenue & Customs have recently launched a tax return initiative. This provides taxpayers who have been issued with self assessment tax returns to complete for 2009/10 or earlier who haven’t yet completed them, the opportunity to bring their tax affairs up to date.
In order to take part in the initiative you are first required to notify HMRC that you wish to do so. This can be done either online or by post. You then need to complete and submit your tax returns and pay any outstanding tax and national insurance by 2nd October 2012.
Late filing penalties are charged where tax returns are filed late. In addition, HMRC can also charge a penalty based on the amount of tax owed. The penalty can be as much as 100% of the tax owed. By taking part in the campaign HMRC are saying that people will receive the best terms on offer and they expect that most will not have to pay the tax based penalty.
